AUFHEBUNG

Aufhebung is a Belgian band formed in the summer of 2020 by members of two former bands. Five members continued as the newly shaped Aufhebung, while retaining the written material from the former bands. The aegis Aufhebung designates the transition of an existing world into a new, possible, better world. 

Aufhebung is a feeling of fleetingness between forms of existence. 

The sonic vocabulary of the Brussels-based band draws from contemporary acts in post-rock, sludge metal, industrial, crust punk, doom metal and classical composition. These include Amenra, Russian Circles, Baroness, 65daysofstatic, Oyaarss, Rachmaninov and Fall Of Efrafa. It transforms these influences by constructing walloping arrangements that are characterized by impactful contrasts and injections of industrial textures, unhinged guitar sounds, dark atmospheric layers, unbalancing patterns and alienating noise which, together, constitute the Aufhebung canvas. 

Their first release, the post-doom full-length 'Chasms,' was recorded in Hasselt in the second half of 2020 and released in April of 2021. Recording, mix and mastering were done in the Farrm studios by producer and engineer Jan Viggria (The Guru Guru, Statue, ...). The record has been described as ‘filmic’ by listeners and press. This is precisely how Aufhebung operates. Aufhebung wants the listener to adopt the role of an actor, a participant in the bewildering scenery that emanates from the music while remaining a part of it. Chasms consists of four movements, three of which are catalyzing while one, ‘On ne parle pas de corde dans la maison du pendu,’ functions more as a pause, an introspective interlude. The penultimate piece, ‘Lament,’ takes the listener on an immersive journey into the beyond-state that is the moment of Aufhebung itself. 

A veteran live-band, Aufhebung is probably best appreciated in performance, even though their studio recordings easily lend themselves to home-listening. Nevertheless, it has been demonstrated many times that the audience reactions are most enthusiastic and appreciative in the context of live performance. 

The second release is planned for 2024. It is again a full-length album, recorded by Jan Viggria who did ‘Chasms.’ Mixing and mastering will be done by Tim De Gieter (Doodseskader, Amenra).
